The President of the Sudanese Sovereignty Council, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, discussed with the Saudi Deputy Foreign Minister, Walid Al-Khuraiji the resumption of the Jeddah negotiations to stop the war in Sudan.
A statement from the Sudanese Sovereignty Council stated that Al-Burhan met Al-Khuraiji, who arrived in the city of Port Sudan, east of the country, on Monday, on an official visit of an unspecified duration.
The Undersecretary of the Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Hussein Awad, explained in the statement that Al-Burhan stressed Sudan’s keenness on the success of the Jeddah Platform as a foundation upon which to build, and the necessity of implementing what was agreed upon in May 2023.
Awad added that the meeting discussed the importance of expanding the base of mediators in the Jeddah negotiations, and Al-Burhan expressed his reservations about the presence of any party supporting the Rapid Support Militia.
During the meeting, the Saudi Deputy Foreign Minister stressed the Kingdom’s keenness on the security and stability of Sudan, noting that Sudan’s stability has a direct impact on the security and stability of the region.
It is noteworthy that the Jeddah negotiations, which began on May 6, 2023, with Saudi-American mediation, resulted in the first agreement between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces on May 11, 2023, which included a commitment to protect civilians and facilitate humanitarian aid.
However, successive agreements witnessed mutual violations, leading to the suspension of negotiations by the mediators.
Since mid-April 2023, the Sudanese forces and the Rapid Support Forces have been fighting a war that has claimed the lives of about 15,000 people and caused the displacement and asylum of about 8.5 million people, according to United Nations estimates.
