Tunisian President Kais Saied reiterated Tunisia’s rejection of its transformation into a transit or settlement point for illegal immigrants.

During his meeting with Foreign Minister Nabil Ammar, the Tunisian president said that his country refuses to be a crossing or a destination for migrants, pointing out that the crisis is the result of global conditions that led to these inhumane results.

Saied criticized what he described as the failure of international organizations to support Tunisia, saying that what they are doing is limited to formal statements or imposing facts that are not acceptable to the Tunisian people.

Saied’s remarks come days before an upcoming visit by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to Tunisia, where illegal immigration is expected to be at the top of the agenda.

Human rights organizations have warned of the dangers of establishing shelters to house refugees deported from the European Union, in a move that reflects the tensions and challenges facing the country in light of the ongoing migration crisis.
