Police and customs authorities in Italy announced that the authorities confiscated two Chinese-made military drones that were on their way to Libya, hidden within wind turbine equipment.
In a joint statement, the police and the customs authority explained that the authorities found the two drones disassembled in 6 containers in the port of Gioia Tauro in the Calabria region of southern Italy, where they were hidden between the blades of wind turbines.
The statement confirmed that the authorities confiscated the two planes because Libya, which is ravaged by civil war, is subject to an international arms embargo.
This statement came to confirm a report published by the Italian newspaper “Corriere Della Sera” last month, which indicated that the interception operation took place in Gioia Tauro on June 18 after a tip-off from American intelligence.
The newspaper indicated that the authorities confiscated the two drones on board a container ship coming from the port of Yantian in southern China and heading to Libya.
Libya is subject to an international arms embargo, and this incident has further complicated the tense situation in the country, as various parties seek military support to strengthen their positions in the ongoing conflict.
