The infrastructure project had been agreed in broad terms in the famous Treaty of Friendship, Partnership and Cooperation signed by Italy and Libya in Benghazi on 30 August 2008.

Italy would be committed to providing financial support of 5 billion dollars for the realization of the “peace highway” project aimed at connecting the Libya eastern and western. The announcement was made by the Authority for the construction of the “Musaid-Ras Jedir” (Erma) road on its Facebook page. Yesterday morning, Rome hosted a meeting of the joint joint commission dedicated to taking stock of the developments of a previous meeting which took place on 29 November 2023.

During the meeting, the Authority confirmed Italy’s commitment to providing financial coverage, as enshrined in the 2008 Italian-Libyan Friendship Treaty. Furthermore, the same source reports, an agreement was reached to allocate 571 million euros in 2024 to complete the contractual procedures of the first sectors (Musaid-Al Marj) and the fourth sector (Misurata-Ras Jedir). The joint joint commission, explains the note relaunched by the Libyan Arabic-language newspaper “Al Wasat”, recently.

The project has already been completed for all four lots, but the works never started due to internal Libyan political instability, doubts relating to the safety of the works, the lack of adequate insurance coverage and, recently, for the huge increase in the cost of building materials.

According to the Libyans, the work on the so-called “peace highway” is ready to restart. The contracting body is Erma, a public company created “ad hoc” to manage the motorway and depends on the Ministry of Transport of the Libyan Government of National Unity (GUN).
