At the request of the United States, the Italian authorities confiscated a large shipment of Chinese weapons that was on its way to eastern Libya.
According to Italian press reports, the confiscation operation was carried out in the port of Gioia Tauro, southern Italy, and includes weapons worth millions of dollars that were loaded on the ship “MSC Arena.”
The ship departed from the Chinese port of Yantian in April, passed through Singapore and circled the Cape of Good Hope, avoiding the Red Sea and the Suez Canal, before entering the Mediterranean via Gibraltar and stopping in Valencia and Barcelona.
The Italian authorities confiscated the shipment upon its arrival in Calabria.
It is noteworthy that the Italian Navy periodically tracks ships heading towards Libya, and these ships often carry narcotic substances. On March 14, 2024, the Italian Navy confiscated a cargo ship that was carrying 35 tons of cannabis seeds, off the coast of Sicily, and on April 27, 2024, it was confiscated. The Italian Coast Guard discovered a boat carrying 20 irregular migrants and a quantity of cocaine, off the coast of Sardinia.
On May 10, 2024, the Italian Navy confiscated a yacht carrying three people and 50 kilograms of cocaine off the coast of Calabria.
