US officials said that Israel is moving forward with its efforts to build a buffer zone near the border with the Gaza Strip, which Tel Aviv considers an inevitable result of the war it has been fighting since the seventh of October, in order to ward off future threats, and so that the same previous attacks do not repeat.

Since last November, the Israeli army has been building a one-kilometer-deep buffer zone along the Gaza Strip border, saying that Tel Aviv has revealed that the army is proceeding with this controversial plan by demolishing buildings.

Although Israeli officials have floated the idea on several occasions, the military’s statements on the matter are the first public confirmation that the strategy is already underway.

The US opposes the creation of a buffer zone in Gaza, saying “there should be no lasting change in the Palestinian territories,” while rights groups accuse Israel of war crimes.

The Wall Street Journal quoted an Israeli soldier as saying that the orders they received were to evacuate a one-kilometer-wide area along the border, as part of an Israeli plan to build a security zone inside the Strip that Palestinians would be barred from entering.
