Israel continues to bombard the Rafah area in the far south of the Gaza Strip on the border with Egypt, as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered his army to prepare a plan to evacuate hundreds of thousands of Palestinian civilians from there ahead of an imminent ground offensive.

Eyewitnesses reported early Saturday morning that raids took place in the vicinity of the city of Rafah, which is now home to about 1.3 million displaced Palestinians, more than half of the population of the Gaza Strip, and they are the vast majority of people who sought refuge there to escape violence in the north.

The developments come amid fears by the United Nations and the international community of a possible Israeli ground offensive on the city, which serves as a last refuge for those displaced from the war in the Gaza Strip.
