Ismail Haniyeh, head of Hamas’ political bureau, arrived at the head of a Hamas delegation in Cairo to discuss the possibility of reaching a new truce in the Gaza Strip.
Haniyeh confirmed earlier this week that the group had received and was considering an offer on a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, adding that he would travel to Cairo to discuss the agreement.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated that Israel has no intention of withdrawing its troops from Gaza and is not considering releasing Palestinians “considered terrorists” until it achieves victory in the current conflict.
At the end of January, it was announced that Israel, the United States, Egypt and Qatar had agreed at a meeting in Paris on the basis of a new deal to free Israeli hostages held since October 7 in the Gaza Strip by Hamas.
According to sources, the deal could include the release of the hostages in exchange for a permanent cessation of hostilities and the release of a large number of Palestinian prisoners from Israeli prisons.
