The Prime Ministry in Iraq announced that the government formed a bilateral committee to determine the arrangements for ending the mission of the US-led international coalition in the country, a day after a US strike targeted a leader of the Popular Mobilization Forces in the capital Baghdad.

A statement by the office of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani indicated that Iraq “is in the process of determining the date for the start of dialogue through the bilateral committee formed to determine the arrangements for the end of this presence, a commitment that the government will not retreat from, and will not give up everything that would complete national sovereignty over the land, skies and waters of Iraq.”

It is noteworthy that a US strike led to the death of Talib Ali al-Saidi, a leader of Harakat al-Nujaba, which is part of the Popular Khashd factions. A Pentagon official said the United States “continues to take action to protect its forces in Iraq and Syria, and by addressing the threats they face.”

The United States is deploying 2,500 troops in Iraq and about 900 in Syria as part of what it calls the “fight against Islamic State” as part of the international coalition established in 2014.
