Hossein Hosseini, the Estiqlal goalkeeper , was attacked by Iranian police during a football match, after responding to a request by a fan to hug her in the middle of the field.

The fan was able to run to the pitch to meet Hosseini, and the security forces did not hesitate to deal harshly with the goalkeeper, which provoked angry reactions from the crowd in the stadium.

The Iranian authorities prohibit any public expression between the sexes, in order to preserve public morals, although the activity of the morality police has declined since the September 2022 protests after the arrest of Mahsa Amini, but individual attacks still exist.

The incident coincides with reports of police moves in recent months to strictly enforce the laws, with women’s vehicles being confiscated for allegedly violating dress codes and closing cafes and restaurants for similar offenses.
