Iranian authorities have banned the Egyptian TV series “Al-Hashashin” in Iran over what they described as “historical distortions”.
Iranian state media reported that authorities had expressed opposition to the inaccurate portrayal of a medieval Persian figure.
The series, which aired during Ramadan 2024, tells the story of Hassan al-Sabah, the founder of an Islamic Shiite sect known for political assassinations during the eleventh century.
Thirty episodes of the series were broadcast about Sabah and his band, which operated from mountain bases in northern and western Iran.
Mehdi Saifi, head of Tehran’s audiovisual media regulatory authority, said the series was no longer approved in Iran, adding that the series’ narrative of Islamic history contained many distortions.
The Iranian news agency “IRNA” quoted experts that the series seeks to present a “false image of Iranians” and link them to the “beginning of terrorism”, which led to the decision to ban the show.
” Al-Hashashin ” stars Egyptian actors Karim Abdel Aziz, Fathi Abdel Wahab, Ahmed Eid and Mirna Nour El-Din, and is directed by Peter Mimi.
