International mediators in the Sudan crisis have sent a direct message to the two parties to the conflict in the country, to seize the opportunity of the negotiations scheduled in Geneva next August, in an attempt to stop the war.

In recent weeks, international attention has increased to the catastrophic situation in Sudan, where fighting continues between the army led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the Rapid Support Forces led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti).

The mediators’ call came at the conclusion of two-day meetings in Djibouti, which are the first of their kind to discuss initiatives on Sudan.

The participants in the meetings discussed coordinating initiatives with the aim of reaching a formula to stop the war and focused on the need to coordinate efforts to immediately cease fire, provide humanitarian aid, and launch a comprehensive political process to address the Sudanese crisis and its roots.

The mediators called on the countries fueling the conflict in Sudan to stop, warning of the danger of the current situation.

They called on the commander of the Sudanese army and the commander of the Rapid Support Forces not to waste the favorable opportunity for dialogue and to participate in the upcoming negotiations in Switzerland.

It is noteworthy that there is a difference of opinion regarding the final statement of the international mediators’ meetings, as the Egyptian Deputy Foreign Minister objected to some of the formulations, demanding a reference to the initiative of Sudan’s neighboring countries and Egypt’s contribution to hosting Sudanese refugees.

The Ambassador of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia demanded the necessity of referring to the Jeddah negotiating platform in the final statement, expressing his agreement with what the Egyptian minister went to.

For his part, the representative of the Arab League explained that the final statement should focus on the main points, which are “an immediate ceasefire, providing humanitarian aid, and conducting a comprehensive dialogue,” stressing that the statement addresses the international mediators and their role in coordinating their efforts.

It was decided to include some points in the final statement and send them to the participants before they leave Djibouti.
