In a video, Interim Prime Minister of Libya National Unity Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh accused Libyans of being a “dependent people who eat for free.”
The video, in which Dbeibeh discusses resource consumption and economic problems, circulated widely on social media.
In the video, Dbeibeh stated that: “40 billion dollars of government spending is unclear,” indicating that Libyans benefit from free services and demand increases in salaries, as well as provision of fuel, electricity, and water for free.”
In response to these statements, Head of Libya Media Foundation Mohamed Baiyu said that Libyans do not benefit from free services, and the cost of living has significantly increased. He addressed Dbeibeh, saying, “Do you know that the Ministry of Interior bought 5,000 cars in just one month?” urging the Prime Minister to disclose his expenses and private trips.
Amidst this controversy, Dbeibeh announced that his government intends to present a case to lift fuel subsidies for a public referendum, expressing readiness to discuss how to prevent resource wastage and combat smuggling.
He also indicated his intention to provide compensation to citizens to cover the costs of gasoline and drive the local economy, emphasizing the importance of transparency in government expenditure management.
