Fierce fighting broke out between Sudan’s army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in southwestern Sudan, military sources said, while the army denounced the European Union’s imposition of sanctions on its institutions.
The sources said that the city of Babanusa in southwestern Sudan witnessed battles between the two sides, adding that the Rapid Support Forces bombed the headquarters of the “22nd Division” of the army, which managed to shoot down a drone belonging to the Rapid Support. The sources pointed out that the army’s warplanes carried out sorties targeting rapid support gatherings at the entrance to the city of Babanousa, and the sources explained that the army was able to repel a ground attack accompanied by bombing with marches on the army headquarters in Babanousa.
On the other hand, the Sudanese army condemned in a statement the imposition of sanctions by the European Union on 3 Sudanese national economic institutions that it claimed were, along with 3 companies affiliated with the Rapid Support, on charges of supporting activities that undermine stability and political transition in Sudan.
“The unjust decision was based on equality that lacks the minimum basis of objectivity and fairness between the national army, which defends the Sudanese people, their independence and dignity, and a terrorist militia that includes tens of thousands of mercenaries committing genocide,” the statement said.
He added that the European Union was expected “to shoulder its political and moral responsibilities towards international and regional peace by pressuring those to stop providing weapons, mercenaries, funding and media support to the terrorist militia, but instead it chose to hide behind the pretext of neutrality between what it calls ‘warring parties'”.
