Authorities in Indonesia have begun relief and search and rescue operations after several areas on the island of Sumatra were hit by flooding and lava flows.
The Indonesian Disaster Management announced the death and loss of dozens of citizens as a result of these disasters, which hit the provinces of Tanah Datar and Agam in the west of the country.
Authorities have reported 41 deaths so far, with 17 people still missing, officials said.
Local authorities confirmed damage to 84 houses, 16 bridges and two mosques in Tanah Datar province, as well as 20 hectares of rice fields and dozens of houses and public buildings in Agham province.
According to AFP, unprecedented heavy rains have struck, prompting residents to seek emergency shelters.
Shelters for the afflicted and emergency relief have opened in the affected areas, and Mount Maabe, one of the country’s most active volcanoes, is seeing cold lava flow into its surroundings.
Floods and landslides are a common phenomenon in Indonesia during the rainy season, and the country has recently seen similar incidents, with many people dying from slides and floods.
