The Indian Ministry of External Affairs announced, in a move that reflects a significant improvement in the security situation in Libya, the easing of travel restrictions to Libya that had been imposed since 2016.

This decision comes after a comprehensive assessment of the security situation in the country, which indicated a significant reduction in the level of risk.

The ministry said in its statement, issued on Wednesday, that the previous ban on Indian citizens traveling to Libya, which was imposed on May 23, 2016, has been amended to advise against travel to the country except in cases of extreme necessity.

The ministry added that it encourages Indian citizens to contact the Indian Embassy in Tripoli in emergency situations.

In a related context, the Ministry of External Affairs of the interim Government of National Unity announced on July 23 the reopening of the Indian Embassy in the Libyan capital, Tripoli.

This announcement came after a meeting between the Director of the Department of Asian and Australian Affairs at the ministry, Nouri Fadhil Al-Kaseh, and the Chargé d’Affaires of the Indian Embassy in Libya, Mohammed Alim.

The statement issued by the ministry confirmed that the embassy will resume its work from its headquarters in Tripoli, including providing visa services to Libyan citizens and following up on the conditions of Indian workers in the country.
