The humanitarian organization “SOS Mediterranee “announced on Wednesday that its ship Ocean Viking has succeeded in rescuing 25 migrants off the coast of Libya.
According to the organization, the migrants were on a rubber boat for an estimated week before being rescued, reporting the deaths of several other migrants, noting that they are now missing.
In light of the emergency, a massive medical relief plan was implemented to care for survivors who were in a very tired physical and psychological condition, and a request for urgent medical evacuation was sent to two people found unconscious and in critical condition.
SOS MEDITERRANEE has rescued more than 39,000 lives in the Mediterranean since 2016, mainly in its central sector, the most dangerous migration route in the world.
In 2023, 3,105 migrants died or went missing after trying to cross the Mediterranean to reach Europe, according to figures from the UN’s International Organization for Migration, and since January, 278 migrants have died or gone missing.
