The commander of the Rapid Support Forces in Sudan, Mohamed Hamdan Daglo “Hemedti”, threatened to form what he described as “real authority” in the areas controlled by his forces and its capital, Khartoum, if army commander Abdel Fattah al-Burhan formed a “war government” in the east of the country.
Hemedti said in an audio message posted on his page on Area X: “If the remnants form a government in Port Sudan, he will immediately begin broad consultations to form a real authority in the areas under his wide and extended control.”
“Khartoum will be its capital, and we will not allow the creation of any alternative capital,” he said, noting that “they met in Port Sudan, including the facades of the National Congress, with fugitives from justice, seeking to claim that they are a legitimate authority.”
He described al-Burhan’s foreign tours that followed his departure from the General Command to Port Sudan as “an attempt to impersonate the head of state, despite his lack of legitimacy”.
Hemedti stressed that the formation of a government in part of Sudan represents a step to divide the country, adding that “despite our control over the majority of Sudan, we did not declare a government because we are not students of power, and we are committed to preserving the unity of our land and our people.”
He accused Burhan and his supporters of the former regime who met in Port Sudan of gathering mercenary groups that pose a threat to neighboring countries.
Hemedti vowed to seize the areas controlled by the army, saying: “Burhan and the remnants now control eastern Sudan, and some areas in the north, and they are within our reach, if we want, we will be today in Port Sudan.”
The unification of the Sudan and the end of the war were a priority for him, he said, stressing his desire for the return of peace, the establishment of democratic civilian rule and the building of a single professional army.
