German authorities arrested on Wednesday a suspected member of the Lebanese Hezbollah on charges of committing crimes against humanity and war crimes in Syria.

The Federal German Attorney General said, in a statement, that an arrest warrant was issued by the investigating judge at the Federal Court of Justice on Nov. 27.

The criminal police in the state of Baden-Württemberg arrested the Syrian suspect, Ammar A., who is strongly suspected of committing crimes against humanity through torture and deprivation of liberty, as well as war crimes against individuals in Syria.

During the Syrian civil war, the Syrian government depended on brutal force against its critics in order to suppress the protest movement. Opposition factions involved in armed clashes against the government forces, with various militias, including Hezbollah, joining the latter.

Ammar A. was a member of Hezbollah in the city of Busra al-Sham in Daraa governorate, south Syria, between 2012 and 2013.

Hezbollah members used to storm civilians’ homes in Busra al-Sham, stealing their belongings and setting fire to the houses under the orders of the accused, according to the statement.

They also killed or tortured civilians before sending them to other cities.
