The body of Ismail Haniyeh, head of the political bureau of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), was buried after Friday prayers at the Imam Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab Mosque in the Qatari capital, Doha.
The funeral prayer witnessed a large attendance of worshipers, in addition to a number of Palestinian, Arab and Islamic leaders and symbols.
Friday preacher Sheikh Mohammed Hassan Al-Marikhi delivered a speech in which he prayed for mercy for the deceased and for God to accept him as a martyr, stressing that the Palestinian cause is the cause of all Muslims that unites them and unifies their ranks, pointing to the great sacrifices made by the Palestinians.
The funeral ceremony included speeches by a number of participating figures before the body was transferred to the cemetery of the founding Imam in Lusail. Burial procedures will be limited to the close circle of the martyr’s family in order to preserve their privacy.
The funeral prayer was performed by the Emir of the State of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Father Emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Qatar, official delegations, and leaders of Palestinian factions.
Haniyeh’s body arrived in Doha from Iran on Thursday, after the Iranian capital witnessed official and popular funeral ceremonies following his assassination at his residence in Tehran. Haniyeh was killed in an Israeli raid that targeted his residence after he participated in the inauguration ceremony of the new Iranian President, Masoud Pezeshkian.
The assassination of Haniyeh comes amid the Israeli military escalation in the Gaza Strip, which began on October 7 with American support, and resulted in more than 130,000 Palestinian deaths and injuries, most of them children and women, in addition to more than 10,000 missing persons.
Israel continues its military campaign despite calls from the UN Security Council to stop it immediately and orders from the International Court of Justice to take measures to protect civilians and improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
