A French newspaper revealed that the resignation of Abdullah Batili, from the presidency of the United Nations mission in Libya, came after he reached the conviction of the impossibility of reconciling the parties competing for power.
The French newspaper “Le Journal du Dimonche” said that the departure of the special envoy from the usual smoothness that diplomats are known to show, after he stated that “the selfish determination of the current leaders to maintain the status quo through maneuvers and tactics of procrastination, at the expense of the Libyan people, must stop.”
The French newspaper quoted researcher David Rigolet Rose of the Institute of International and Strategic Relations as saying that the current situation in Libya reflects a dilemma, as the experience of Bathili and his Africanism was expected to be in favor of the situation there, but it seems that it was not enough to stir up public opinion.
It is noteworthy that Bathili submitted his resignation to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, last Tuesday, amid a state of political stalemate in Libya, and the rejection of the Libyan parties all efforts made to agree on holding elections to end the current stage.
The move comes in a context where international envoys face a major challenge in trying to find a negotiated solution to the Libyan conflict that has been ongoing since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi’s regime in October 2011.
