French Foreign Minister Stéphane Sigourne announced that his country will host a humanitarian conference in mid-April to support Sudan, which is going through a deep crisis.
The French minister made the announcement during a hearing in the National Assembly and stressed that Paris remains supportive of African regional organizations to facilitate ways out of crises.
The war that broke out in April 2023 between the Sudanese army led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the Rapid Support Forces led by his former deputy Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo killed thousands and caused a humanitarian catastrophe.
Some 25 million people need assistance and some 18 million face severe food insecurity, according to UN figures.
The fighting has also forced some two million Sudanese to flee abroad, many to neighboring Chad and Egypt.
The clashes have also displaced more than six million people within the country.
