Arab immigrants in France fear the repercussions of the results of the first round of legislative elections, which witnessed the rise of the extreme right.

These legislative elections are preceded by parliamentary elections at the European Union level, in which the far right advanced strongly.

The National Rally and its allies took first place in the first round with 33.15%, while the Left Union came in second place with 27.99% of the votes, and President Emmanuel Macron’s camp came in third place with 20.76% of the votes.

Haifa, a home helper for the elderly and a babysitter in the city of Lyon, points out that the complications brought by the new immigration law will increase with the rise of the extreme right.

Haifa, a Tunisian woman in her thirties, expresses her concern about the extreme right’s focus on the issue of immigration and immigrants, even though they hold important positions in multiple fields.

The significant progress achieved by the National Rally in the first round of mobilization increases the way for the extreme right to achieve a majority in the National Assembly.

Idris, a Moroccan IT engineer who has lived in Paris for five years, expresses the impact of the unexpected results on his feelings, noting his fears of racism that might spread within French society.

Philosopher and professor Nicholas Tenzer points out that the immigration issue has become dominant in the voting motives of French voters, as the extreme right plays on the fear of the spread of Islam and the security threat. The political analyst reveals that the immigration law has already been voted on, but it may be strengthened with this shift to the right in the General Assembly.

The National Rally Party states in its election campaign leaflet that it wants to stop the flow of immigrants by significantly reducing legal and illegal immigration and expelling foreign offenders, as the party’s leader, Jordan Bardella, seeks to submit an emergency law on immigration to Parliament if his party obtains an absolute majority.

Bardella announces that if he is appointed Prime Minister, he will adopt an immigration law aimed at facilitating the expulsion of criminal aliens and lifting current administrative restrictions. The emergency law seeks to abolish the “right to land” and amend government medical assistance to cover medical emergencies only.

Bardella asserts that the most strategic positions in the government will be allocated to French citizens, which means excluding dual nationalities from these positions. He also seeks to allocate social housing to the French with preference, which will affect immigrants with limited income.
