The Tunisian authorities have opened a judicial investigation against former President Mohamed Marzouki, journalist and presenter Houcine Ben Omar, and the director of Zaytouna TV, journalist Sami Essid.

The Ariana court said the investigation was opened following a televised interview between the former Tunisian president and journalist Ben Amor.

The Euro-Med Monitor denounced the continuous arrests and summons targeting journalists in Tunisia, noting that these developments represent a serious violation of human rights and fundamental freedoms.

He called for the cessation of all forms of violations and respect for human rights and public freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution and its international obligations.

Euro-Med Monitor said in a statement that the Tunisian authorities opened on April 15 a judicial investigation against former President Mohamed Moncef Marzouki, journalist and presenter, Houcine Ben Omar, and the director of the channel “Zaytouna”, journalist Sami Essid, according to a statement quoted by the official spokesman of the Ariana court.

The Observatory explained that this measure comes in the context of the crackdowns that the country has been witnessing since July 2021, when Tunisian President Kais Saied imposed “exceptional measures”, including the dissolution of parliament and the dismissal of the government.

The Observatory stressed the importance of the Tunisian authorities respecting their constitutional and international obligations and called for an end to all forms of restrictions on public freedoms, respect for human rights and political participation.

At the end of its statement, the Observatory renewed its call on the Tunisian authorities to abide by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and called for the release of all those detained on charges with political or human rights backgrounds.
