Algeria’s Sonatrach and Germany’s VNG on Thursday signed a contract to supply Algerian natural gas to Germany via pipeline for the first time.

Sonatrach CEO Rachid Hachichi said in a statement: “We are delighted to strengthen our energy partnerships with Europe through this historic agreement with VNG.”

“There is great potential to further develop this trade cooperation and expand it in the future to other areas, such as hydrogen,” Hashishi said.

For his part, VNG General Manager Ulf Heittmüller said: “Under the signed contract, VNG becomes the first German company to buy pipelined gas from Algeria.”

“The contract opens new horizons and strengthens the German-Algerian partnership in the field of energy,” Heitmüller explained.

Berlin has been forced to look for new suppliers after it stopped importing Russian gas, which it relied on for decades following Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine.
