Trucks loaded with relief aid began entering the Gaza Strip through the Kerem Shalom crossing, for the first time since the outbreak of the war between Israel and Hamas.

“Aid entered Gaza through the Kerem Shalom crossing for the first time since the outbreak of the war,” a UN official told AFP, adding that “79 trucks began entering on Sunday through the Kerem Shalom crossing on their way to the besieged Gaza Strip.”

Israel confirmed that “from December 17, UN aid trucks will undergo security checks and be transported directly to Gaza through the Kerem Shalom crossing.”

Through the Kerem Shalom crossing, 60 percent of goods entered the Gaza Strip, which Israel has imposed a comprehensive blockade on since before the October 7 Hamas offensive that killed some 1,140 people.

Since Israel tightened its blockade of the Strip after the outbreak of the war, humanitarian aid was limited to the Rafah border crossing with Egypt only, but international pressure forced Israel to decide to open the Kerem Shalom crossing as well.
