The Benghazi International Sailing Championship kicked off on Saturday on the beach of Jaliana, with the participation of seven international teams, including Libya, in a sporting event that is the first of its kind in the country.
The Libyan Sailing and Marine Sports Federation described the championship as a historic event for Libya, with teams from Egypt, Tunisia, Iraq, Morocco, and Sudan participating.
The championship includes three main categories: the “Optimist” category, the International Laser Class Association (ILCA 7) category, and the “Kiteboarding” category.
The Spanish referee Jose Manuel Miranda Carrera heads the judging committee for this international championship, which adds more professionalism and competitiveness to the event.
The championship is part of the activities of the Benghazi Summer Festival 2024, where the competitions continue until August 13.
The Benghazi Sailing Festival is considered an important event for the country that is witnessing political tensions, as the eastern Libyan government seeks to consolidate the state of security stability in its regions and encourage tourism, and work on reconstruction and development of infrastructure.
