The Sudanese city of Kassala witnessed heavy rains that led to widespread flooding, causing the submergence of many homes and shelters for the displaced, and severe damage to the infrastructure.
Several areas in the city were affected by the failure of sewage systems, which exacerbated the critical humanitarian situation.
The Kassala Youth Emergency Room launched an urgent appeal to provide water pumps to help drain the rainwater accumulated in the shelters, including the industrial school, the concrete structure, the Omar Al-Haj Musa Center, and the reference hospital.
There was also an appeal to provide warm clothing, especially for children, to cope with the cold and difficult conditions.
The Director General of the Ministry of Agriculture in Kassala, Khader Ramadan, said that heavy rains killed four people and destroyed hundreds of homes in rural areas, including the village of Aroma.
Reports from the Sudan Meteorological Agency and the Kenyan Observatory also indicated that rainfall rates during the autumn season may exceed normal rates, which portends more humanitarian and logistical challenges in the coming period.
Initial data indicates that about 1,470 houses were completely damaged in Kassala countryside locality, particularly affected in the areas of Adrman, Tajouj, Al-Laffa, Wad Sharifi and the surrounding villages.
Kassala is located in eastern Sudan, and is considered the eastern gateway to Sudan, an important commercial and agricultural center, and is 496 meters above sea level. It has a number of refugee camps that host large numbers of refugees, especially from neighboring countries that are witnessing conflicts and wars.
