Niger’s Minister of Humanitarian Action and Disaster Management, Aissa Lawan Wandarma, announced that floods that have hit the country since last June have resulted in the death of at least 94 people and the displacement of more than 137,000 people.

Authorities explained that the floods have injured 93 people, while the deaths were due to drowning and the collapse of houses.

The capital, Niamey, which had previously been spared the damage, was also affected, with four people killed and several injured, according to the Ministry of the Interior.

The floods also destroyed more than 15,000 homes and about forty classrooms, in addition to the death of more than 15,000 heads of livestock.

The Nigerian electricity company, “Nigelec”, was also forced to cut off electricity in some areas as a precaution due to the flooding of power stations.

It is worth noting that the rainy season in Niger extends from June to September and annually witnesses great losses in lives and property.

The floods killed 195 people and displaced 400,000 others, reflecting the scale of the challenges facing the country in dealing with these natural disasters.
