The Finnish Ministry of the Interior has issued a new regulation on facilitating the voluntary return of migrants to their home country. Under it 5,300 euros will be paid to those whose application for asylum has been rejected if they return to their home country voluntarily within 30 days.

According to the ministry’s press release, migrants must apply within 30 days to receive payment. If the application is submitted later, the payment will be only €2,000. The new regulation will come into force on January 1, 2024.

The ministry explained that the new decision facilitated the system of assistance for voluntary repatriation, noting that in the previous version of the document, the amount of payments depended on the country of origin of the migrant, but the current amount according to the new decree has become equal for all.

It was clarified that the amount will not be paid when moving to another EU or Schengen countries, as well as to a country whose citizens do not need a visa to Finland. “Voluntary assistance upon return may consist of financial support for the costs of relocation and reintegration.”
