The Secretary-General of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum, Mohamed Hamil, predicted that Africa will become one of the world’s leading gas producers.

“Africa’s gas production is called upon to become one of the main drivers of increasing the global supply of natural gas in the medium and long term,” Hamil said during the meeting of the African Group of Ambassadors in the Qatari capital, Doha, noting that the nine African countries members of the forum contribute an annual production of gas estimated at 245 billion cubic meters.

The forum consists of 19 countries, including Russia, Iran and Qatar, and nine African countries: Algeria, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Libya, Nigeria, Mozambique, Mauritania and Senegal.

“These nine countries together have more than 15,000 billion cubic meters of proven gas reserves, representing 94 percent of Africa’s gas reserves,” he said, stressing that these countries contribute to the annual gas production of 245 billion cubic meters.

“Africa plays an important role in the global trade of gas as a major supplier through gas and liquefied natural gas pipelines,” the Secretary-General of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum added, noting the importance of the gas pipeline network extending from North Africa, which constitutes “an important supply method for the European market, while the ability to export liquefied natural gas in the region contributes significantly to the global trade of liquefied natural gas.”

On primary energy consumption in Africa, the Secretary-General of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum noted that it remains at a “relatively weak” level, noting that natural gas is the main source of electricity production on the continent and contributes 40% to the total energy mix.

“Given Africa’s large natural gas reserves, there is undoubtedly great potential for growth in natural gas consumption, which could contribute to reducing energy poverty and promoting socio-economic development across the continent,” said Hamil, adding that the GEF stands “firmly with its African partners in addressing these challenges.”
