The Libyan Refugee Affairs Commission evacuated 97 asylum seekers to Rome via Mitiga International Airport in Tripoli, in the first evacuation operation from Libya to Europe in 2024.

The Commission, through its website, stated that among the individuals evacuated were women, children, and individuals suffering from serious medical conditions, the majority of whom are of Sudanese nationality.

The Commission encouraged other countries to open humanitarian corridors, alleviate the pressure on host nations, and contribute to a more sustainable response to the urgent needs of refugees in and outside Libya.

The Commission affirmed its commitment to continuing efforts, relying on the international community to assist in finding safer pathways for the evacuation of refugees from Libya.

According to the latest statistics from the Commission, there are over 59,000 registered refugees in Libya, with around 400 refugees deported to Italy in 2022 in collaboration with the Italian Ministries of Interior and Foreign Affairs.
