The European Union has announced a €7.4 billion aid package to support Egypt in tackling illegal migration to Europe.
Ahmed Fahmy, spokesman for the Egyptian presidency, said in remarks broadcast on Egyptian state television that “the Egyptian-European summit witnessed talk about bilateral cooperation between Egypt and Europe in energy and illegal immigration.”
The Egyptian official explained that this package of European investments is directed to financing development, and the returns of this package will return to both sides, pointing out that Egypt contains many promising opportunities, and is able to cross crises.
The move comes amid fears that Egypt’s financial woes could worsen as a result of conflicts in Gaza and Sudan, and growing migration pressure on Europe.
The package is the latest in a series of EU agreements with North African countries, such as Tunisia and Mauritania, to support economic stability in the southern Mediterranean and stem illegal migration from Africa.
