Ethiopia’s Minister of Innovation and Technology, Balat Molla, has announced plans to establish a “Nuclear Science and Technology Center” in cooperation with Russia.
In a speech to the House of Representatives, Mola said discussions were underway with Russia’s state atomic energy company Rosatom for the implementation of the project.
The Ethiopian minister stressed that his country is working to “develop competencies in the field of nuclear science and technology” by sending students to study in China and Russia.
Mola also stressed the importance of supporting innovation and technology within the country, in addition to stimulating research activities that contribute to addressing societal challenges and promoting sustainable development.
He pointed out that the lack of the necessary laws and regulations, and the difficulties of obtaining foreign currency to buy technology, are the most prominent challenges facing the innovation and technology sector in Ethiopia.
He added that it is necessary to “close the gaps between urban and rural areas, men and women, as well as district and city administrations” in relation to the implementation of Ethiopia’s Digital Strategy 2025.
According to Molla, the House Standing Committee on Human Resources Development, Employment and Technology Affairs proposed “the establishment of centers in each region to provide support and capabilities to young individuals with creative ideas.”
These steps are part of Ethiopia’s overall strategy to push for a more innovative and technologically advanced future.
