Ethiopia is pleased to begin the fifth filling process of the Renaissance Dam, amid Egyptian fears that this will catastrophically affect its revenues from the Nile water, while Addis Ababa continues to complete the operation of the dam.
Media outlets quoted the former Egyptian Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Mohamed Nasr Allam, warning of what he described as “catastrophic results of the fifth filling of the Renaissance Dam,” noting that these results would be more difficult if they coincided with a dry season.
He said, “The fifth filling of the Renaissance Dam may coincide with a dry season.” Then, it will be a disaster, and filling must be prevented.”
The former Egyptian Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation added, “All of this will become clear within 4 to 6 weeks.”
Egypt’s fears of a drought in the country are increasing, especially with Ethiopia adopting a policy of closing the lower outlets of the dam and depriving Egypt and Sudan of any discharges from the Blue Nile River, except for what is discharged through the lower turbine outlets.
