Sudanese army aircraft bombed El Fasher, the capital of the Darfur region, on Tuesday evening, killing and wounding dozens of civilians, according to Sky News Arabia.
The shelling targeted five of the city’s districts, where the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) are vying for control of the area.
The military escalation comes as fighting between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces has continued in several areas of the country for more than a year.
Recent hours have seen an escalation in violence, with exchanges of attacks between the two sides in the capital Khartoum and West Kordofan and Jazira states.
As part of the conflict, the RSF has released videos showing its first use of advanced drones, signaling an evolution in the way military operations are carried out in the country.
In Khartoum and Omdurman, both sides focused on selective attacks, targeting the RSF from a distance from an airstrip inside the Wadi Sedna military base north of Omdurman, and continuing its siege on the signal corps. At the same time, the army carried out aerial bombardments targeting RSF gatherings in southern and eastern Khartoum.
Sky News quoted sources as saying that fighting is intensifying on several fronts, with warnings of a large-scale attack by the army from the south on Gezira state, where the RSF controls most of the areas there.
Fears are growing that the humanitarian crisis in Sudan will worsen, with increasing displacement and suffering to civilians as a result of the ongoing conflict.
