The warring parties in Sudan continue to mobilize their fighters with unprecedented intensity on the battlefronts, in preparation for what appears to be a decisive battle that may be raging in the capital Khartoum and Gezira state.
These moves come as some armed movements in Darfur entered the fray for the first time, raising fears of negative repercussions on ethnic conflicts in the region.
Ammar al-Siddiq, a member of the external advisory council of the commander of the Sudanese Rapid Support Forces, said the two sides have mobilized their fighters with unprecedented intensity on the battlefronts, which foreshadows a fateful battle on the horizon.
Another official said: “The joining of armed movements to the army may lead to more intensity, violence and fighting, and the conflict may extend to new areas, especially since these movements are present in more than one axis, in eastern and central Sudan and in Darfur, specifically in El Fasher, and of course the entry of new areas of fighting means more victims and prolongs the extent of the conflict.”
The announcement by SLM Chairman Minni Arko Minawi and other leaders of the armed movements to engage in fighting the RSF has raised concerns among many, given that the armed movement forces hail from the Darfur region, from which the RSF fighters also hail, and their fighting in Khartoum or the island may reflect on the region, which has long suffered from tribal conflicts.
It is noteworthy that all the forces of the movements that were pushed to the battlefronts are newly recruited in camps set up in eastern Sudanese states under the supervision of the Sudanese army, while the Rapid Support Forces mobilized a huge force of their fighters near the city of El Fasher.
