The Algerian Foreign Ministry summoned Niger’s ambassador after Niger summoned Algeria’s ambassador in Niamey to protest the violent deportation of thousands of migrants.
Algeria has in recent years become a preferred destination for illegal migrants from West and Central Africa, with tens of thousands of them deported since 2014, according to the International Organization for Migration.
In a backlash, the government of the Nigerien military regime summoned the Algerian ambassador to “protest” the “violent nature” of the returns and deportations of thousands of West African migrants from Algeria to Niger.
In a statement on Saturday, Algeria reiterated its adherence to the basic rules of good neighborliness and noted the existence of a bilateral framework dedicated to this issue.
NGOs denounced the “inhumane treatment” of migrants, who are returned an average of about 2,000 a month from Algeria and Libya to neighboring Niger, while Algeria denied the accusations.
These latest tensions demonstrate the urgent need for international solutions that address irregular migration issues in a comprehensive and humane manner, to ensure human rights and enhance the safety and security of migrants.
