A third-year high school student in Kafr El-Zayat, Gharbia Governorate, Egypt, set herself on fire, fearing that she would not achieve the results that would qualify her to join the college she wanted.

The incident occurred hours before the announcement of the high school results, as the student, who was studying in the science section, was transferred to Kafr El-Zayat General Hospital, and received the necessary treatment for third-degree burns covering 90% of her body.

Doctors described her condition as critical, which prevented the possibility of questioning her about the motives behind her horrific act.

Investigations revealed that the student was suffering from a worsening psychological crisis due to the pressures related to the exam results, which prompted her to take this desperate step.

Egypt has witnessed some suicide cases among high school students due to psychological and academic pressures. In August 2024, a student committed suicide after a quarrel with his father over high school results, while a study showed that 21.5% of high school students in Egypt are thinking about suicide, while 29.3% suffer from psychological problems such as anxiety, stress and depression.
