Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has issued a decision to refer the case of the death of player Ahmed Refaat to the Public Prosecution Office to determine responsibilities and ensure justice is served.
El-Sisi stressed the need to reveal all the facts and identify those responsible for any potential negligence, noting the state’s commitment to justice and transparency.
The president directed the need to organize and improve travel procedures for athletes subject to conscription, with the aim of avoiding any complications that may affect their health or performance.
This step came after demands to clarify the circumstances of Refaat’s sudden death, as he died after recovering from a heart attack he suffered during a match last March. In addition,
The Public Prosecution Office will examine all aspects of the case, including the medical care Refaat received and the circumstances surrounding his death, to submit a detailed report that will pave the way for taking the necessary legal measures if investigations reveal any violations.
Egyptian player Ahmed Refaat, winger for Modern Future and the Egyptian national team, died at the age of 31 after suffering from heart problems. Refaat suffered a sudden cardiac arrest during his team’s match against Al-Ittihad Alexandria in March 2024, and his heart stopped for half an hour before he was resuscitated with electric shocks and transferred to the hospital.
Refaat underwent intensive treatment, including the installation of a stent and sessions on a pacemaker, and remained under medical observation for several weeks until he was discharged from the hospital in April 2024. Despite the apparent improvement, he died in July 2024 as a result of a sudden cardiac arrest, which had no clear medical cause according to the attending physician.
