Egyptian boxer Yomna Ayad has been disqualified from the Paris 2024 Olympics after failing to reach the required weight by 700 grams.
The head of the Egyptian Boxing Federation, Mohamed Abdel Aziz Ghanem, revealed that an investigation has been opened with the player to clarify the reasons that led to her weight gain, stressing that the technical and administrative staff performed their role to the fullest until the last moments before the exclusion.
Ghanem explained that Ayad’s weight was 54 kg until Friday evening before the tournament, but the sudden increase in her weight caused her to be officially excluded from the competition, indicating that there is no room for appeal in this case.
On the other hand, the consultant of obstetrics and gynecology and assistant secretary-general of the Doctors Syndicate, Dr. Khaled Amin, indicated that several factors may be behind this weight gain, including food intake, fluid retention, and hormonal changes.
For her part, Yomna’s mother, Lobna Sabry, expressed her disappointment, noting that her daughter was preparing hard for the championship through a closed training camp that lasted for a month and a half, adding that boxing requires special attention to diet and weight maintenance.
In this context, MP Sanaa El-Saeed criticized this exclusion, describing it as a disaster that reflects a kind of neglect, and demanded clarifications from the Minister of Youth and Sports to fully understand the circumstances of the matter.
Yomna Ayad is an Egyptian boxer who has achieved many accomplishments. At the 2022 Mediterranean Games, she won the bronze medal in the 54 kg weight category, making her the first Egyptian woman to win a boxing medal in this championship.
