Egyptian Defense Minister Mohamed Zaki said on Thursday that the Egyptian army is capable of confronting any challenges imposed on it, thanks to the strength and cohesion of the Egyptian people and their national leadership, as he put it.
Zaki stressed during the activities of a tactical training project for the Second Field Army that “Egypt has constants that it does not deviate from and does not take sides except in the interest of national security.”
The Minister of Defense stressed “the important and effective role played by Egypt in supporting the Palestinian cause throughout history.”
Zaki said, “The current situation is being dealt with the utmost wisdom to support and preserve the issue and support the Palestinian brothers on the basis of the two-state solution,” noting that “preserving Sinai is not complete except with comprehensive development.”
These statements come in light of the increasing tension between Egypt and Israel, since the Israeli army announced a military operation in the city of Rafah, south of Gaza, at the beginning of this month, and its control of the Palestinian side of the Rafah crossing, a step that was condemned by Cairo, and prompted it to stop the entry of humanitarian aid via The crossing.
The war, which began in October last year, following a surprise attack by Hamas, led to the killing of more than 35,000 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
