The security services in Egypt were able to thwart an attempt to smuggle a huge shipment of narcotic pills valued at 125 million pounds (about 2.6 million dollars), which were hidden inside tree trunks prepared for export.

The Egyptian Ministry of Interior confirmed in an official statement that the security services received information about two people, one of whom holds a foreign nationality, planning to smuggle a large quantity of “Captagon” narcotic tablets out of the country.

The statement explained that the defendants were planning to smuggle drugs by hiding them inside manufactured tree trunks, which were prepared in a warehouse in Cairo, to be part of a shipment of olive trees used in the charcoal industry, which was prepared for export to another country.

The statement indicated that the authorities were able to arrest the defendants in possession of about 2.5 million Captagon narcotic tablets, with a total weight of 420 kilograms, in addition to 25 hollow tree trunks to smuggle narcotic substances inside, in addition to the devices and tools used in their criminal activity, and the necessary legal measures were taken against them. The accused.

During the current year, Egypt witnessed several security operations targeting drug smuggling. On January 16, 2024, a group of armed men moved in possession of 174 kilograms of drugs to reach the border with Israel, specifically the Al-Awja crossing, and an exchange of fire took place, and the Egyptian army arrested six of the smugglers.
