Egypt threatened to completely withdraw from mediation efforts between Israel and Hamas, after publishing an article on the American ‘CNN’ website accusing it of changing the terms of the ceasefire deal in the Gaza Strip.
Diaa Rashwan, head of the State Information Service, confirmed that the article contains “allegations devoid of any information or facts” and is not based on reliable journalistic sources.
Rashwan described the article as aiming to distort Egypt’s main role in ceasefire attempts in Gaza, stressing that Egypt has made enormous efforts to prevent the killing and wounding of hundreds of innocent civilians and the destruction of life in the Strip.
Rashwan explained that Egypt has received repeated demands and urging from Israel and the United States to play a mediation role based on its experience in this field.
Rashwan expressed Egypt’s astonishment at the attempts of some parties to insult Egyptian efforts in mediation, considering that directing accusations against the mediators aims to procrastinate and evade making crucial decisions regarding the ceasefire deal and the release of detainees.
Rashwan said that the State Information Service sent an official letter to CNN rejecting the allegations and demanding that the Egyptian response be published immediately. He added that the website responded and published parts of the Egyptian response that included some of the observations contained therein.
The head of the State Information Service concluded his statements by emphasizing that continuing attempts to cast doubt and insult the Egyptian mediation efforts and roles, with allegations that contradict reality, will only lead to further complicating the situation in Gaza and the entire region, and may push the Egyptian side to take a decision to completely withdraw from the mediation it is carrying out in the conflict. ‘CNN’ had accused Egypt of quietly changing the terms of the ceasefire, which led to thwarting a deal that would have included the release of Israeli and Palestinian prisoners, and a temporary end to the fighting in Gaza.
