The Center for the Revival of Audiovisual Heritage at the Media Production City in Cairo has launched a unique rescue project aimed at preserving the heritage of Egyptian cinema and preventing its loss as a result of damage, through the direct restoration of a group of old films.

This project consists of the restoration of 50 old films from the archives of Egyptian cinema, where copies of these films are updated and renewed using 4K technology to ensure clarity of the image and protection from the effects of time.

This initiative comes as an important rescue step to preserve the memory of Egyptian cinema, which is facing the threat of loss. Serious work is underway to restore and renovate films, starting with the 1978 film “Les Misérables”, which starred Farid Shawky, Mohsen Tawfik, Adel Adham, Ferdous Abdel Hamid, and Laila Alawi. Emphasis is placed on completing the restoration of the rest of the films in succession.

This initiative came after the publication of an investigation that revealed the reality of preserving Egyptian films in insufficient warehouses to provide measures to protect them from damage and wear.

The investigation revealed that important films had already been destroyed without revealing their titles, prompting this serious project to save and restore these precious works of art to the public and future generations.
