Shahat Ghatouri, head of the Egyptian Customs Authority, revealed the total value of goods released since the beginning of this year until the end of July, which amounted to about $44 billion.

Ghatouri confirmed that there were no goods accumulated in Egyptian ports, except for cars for people with disabilities only, and stated that the releases included all types of goods, with priority always given to strategic goods.

Ghatouri explained that Egypt has released 85,000 cars since the beginning of the year, including 17,000 cars designated for people with disabilities and 24,000 cars as part of the initiative to import cars for Egyptians working abroad. He pointed out that Egypt released 142,000 cars last year, including 68,000 cars for the disabled.

The Customs Authority has launched inspection campaigns to verify that people with disabilities benefit from the released cars and has collected fines worth 209 million pounds during the past two months as a result of illegal exploitation of cars for the disabled.

Ghatouri stated that the Central Bank of Egypt took a package of exceptional measures last March, including liberalizing the exchange rate, which led to the value of the Egyptian pound declining from about 31 pounds to about 50 pounds against the dollar.

Ghatouri added that the newly developed electronic systems in Egypt play an important role in accelerating the customs clearance process for goods and merchandise, which enhances their flow to local markets and production units.
