Egypt’s Ministry of Planning and Economic Development announced on Thursday that Egypt recorded the lowest population growth rate in 50 years, as this rate declined from 2.6% in 2017 to 1.4% in 2023.
According to the ministry, population growth rates declined in the same period by 46%, reflecting the state’s efforts to address the population issue.
The statement pointed out that the number of births during 2023 amounted to about two million births, which is 15% lower compared to 2018 and by 7% compared to 2022.
Egypt’s population growth poses a challenge to its resources, with about 60 percent of the population living at the poverty line, especially with shortages of water, jobs, and hospitals.
Egypt launched the National Project for Egyptian Family Development in February 2022 to improve education and health and control population growth.
It is also working on a new capital that is supposed to accommodate a rapid population that some economists have seen as draining resources and increasing financial burdens.
