Traders in the European and Middle Eastern grain market said that the General Authority for Supply Commodities, Egypt’s state grain buyer, is in direct talks to buy large quantities of wheat without launching an international tender.
The traders added that the requested quantity could include about 30 shipments of between 50,000 and 60,000 tons, according to “Reuters”.
The traders explained that Russian wheat is among the origins being negotiated to buy from, but it was not clear whether the negotiations include wheat shipments from other countries.
This comes after the General Authority for Supply Commodities bought a modest quantity of 280,000 tons in an international tender, out of the 3.8 million tons it had announced it wanted to buy.
Traders said that Egypt sought to set conditions for delaying payment in the tender held yesterday, Monday, as part of its attempt to obtain large quantities of wheat at reasonable prices, which led to the purchase of quantities much smaller than requested.
A source indicated that the Russian companies “United Grain” and “Dmitra” could provide the quantities of wheat that Egypt is in direct negotiations over on Tuesday.
