An Egyptian court has sentenced 35 smugglers involved in the sinking of the Libyan boat off the coast of Greece at the end of last year, according to sentences ranging from life imprisonment to rigorous imprisonment.
The sinking boat was carrying 281 migrants of various nationalities, including 8 Egyptians.
The Criminal Court of Appeal for terrorism and human trafficking crimes in Egypt punished 16 defendants, with life imprisonment and a fine of 5 million pounds and sentenced 10 years to rigorous imprisonment for 14 defendants, a fine of two million pounds, and 5 years rigorous imprisonment against 5 defendants, and a fine of one million pounds, and the court acquitted a 19-year-old girl in the case, and also ordered the confiscation of seizures in the case.
The case revealed that the illegal immigration mafia, led by a Libyan national, married to an Egyptian woman, assisted by his brother-in-law, an Egyptian married to a Libyan, a gold merchant, a farm owner, the owner of a travel agency and the placement of workers abroad, the owner of a tourist office, a car dealer, 3 women and others.
The case clarified the different roles of the members of the gang run by the Libyan, as it gathers those wishing to travel on the farm owned by one of the defendants, before their travel to Libya, in coordination between the owner of the travel agency and the owner of the tourism company, who are responsible for completing the procedures and extracting the necessary papers for the migrants’ travel to Libya, in preparation for transporting them from the Libyan coast to Greece and from there to Italy, which is the destination of most migrants.
The gold trader provides the required foreign currency, as well as changing the currencies received from the victims, and receives various funds and transfers through his bank accounts and various electronic payment applications, while the leader of the organization manages the entire process, and coordinates with external parties present in the State of Libya, which receive those wishing to migrate illegally to travel through the Libyan coast.
