Egypt is preparing to acquire French “Barracuda”-class submarines in the coming period, as the Israeli news website “nziv” revealed the details of the deal.
Egypt aims to obtain between 4 to 6 submarines powered by conventional power (electricity/diesel), which are manufactured by the French company Naval Group.
According to reports, this deal will be completed by 2026, with the improvement of economic conditions in Egypt, and for its part, the “Barracuda” submarines will replace the first-generation French nuclear submarines that Egypt currently possesses.
The Barracuda model is distinguished by its smaller size compared to large ballistic submarines, as it weighs about 5,000 tons and can accommodate a crew of only 65 people.
Although the smaller crew enhances the submarine’s modern operational capability, it faces challenges related to increased fatigue and difficulty in responding quickly, which may affect the crew’s logistical performance.
